Search for a POS gets massive spam
Type the words “best POS system” into a search engine and watch what happens to your week. You will find a form that promises a free quote, you will fill it out because that is what the form is for, and within the hour your phone will begin ringing from numbers you do not recognize. Your inbox will fill with subject lines containing the word “exclusive.” A salesperson named Brandon will call you four times before lunch and leave a voicemail implying you two have already met. You did not buy anything. You did not even decide anything. You simply announced, to an entire industry built on lead generation, that you are a business owner with money and a problem.
It helps to understand why this happens, because it is not an accident and it is not really about you. Most of those comparison sites and “get matched to the right POS” forms are not neutral guides. They are lead brokers. The moment you enter your number, it becomes a product, packaged and sold, often to several sellers at once, each of whom paid for the right to chase you across the next two weeks. The articles ranking the top ten point of sale systems of the year are frequently not rankings at all. They are advertising arranged by who paid the most for the position. None of this is illegal, and very little of it is even hidden. It is simply built for the seller’s benefit rather than yours, and once you see that clearly the noise becomes much easier to ignore.
So the first rule of shopping for a point of sale system is unglamorous and extremely effective. Be slow to hand over your contact information. Your phone number is not a search term. Treat it like the finite and valuable thing it is, and do not surrender it to a website just because the website asked nicely and used the word free.
The good news is that sources with genuine integrity do exist, and they share one quiet trait. None of them is trying to sell you a terminal. Start with the Retail Solutions Providers Association at gorspa.org, the trade body for the point of sale and retail technology industry and the organization behind the RetailNOW conference. You will not buy a system there, but you can find out whether the dealer courting you actually belongs to the professional community or simply registered a domain last quarter. Look next at the associations for your own line of work, the National Restaurant Association, the National Grocers Association, and your state and local restaurant and grocery groups. They have no hardware to move and a real interest in keeping their members away from bad actors. Then consider SCORE and your local Small Business Development Center, nonprofit and government supported advisors who will sit down with you at no charge and, refreshingly, have nothing whatsoever to sell. And do not overlook the most underrated source of all, which is the operator down the road in your own trade. The liquor store owner two towns over who has run the same system for six years will give you the truth in about ninety seconds, including the parts the brochure carefully left out.
We built PCIT POS Systems to be the version of this process that does not leave you wanting a shower afterward. We are a local independent dealer working with hospitality operators and, especially, with independent retail, the bodegas, ethnic grocers, liquor stores, and specialty shops that the national lead machines tend to treat as interchangeable. We have spent years inside the real industry rather than the search results version of it, and that experience is the entire difference between a system that fits how you actually run your floor and a box that technically turns on. We will not sell your number to anyone. We will ask what you do before we suggest what you should buy, and if a national name happens to be the right answer for you, we will tell you that too.
When you are ready to have one good conversation instead of dodging fifteen bad ones, reach PCIT POS Systems at pcitpos.com or call 714 574 8980. We will pick up on the first try, and we will still be here long after Brandon has moved on to a different list.
